Para Kore Zero Waste

What does it mean and why is it so important?

The environmental impacts of waste are significant: Greenhouse gas emissions, polluted oceans and waterways, biodiversity destruction, and toxic contaminated soil and groundwater. That is not the future we want for Aotearoa. Auckland Council are working on getting to zero waste by 2040 and we are getting on board with this important goal.

Zero waste is a philosophy and design principle that aims to eliminate waste by rethinking how resources are produced, consumed, and recovered. Rather than following a linear "take–make–dispose" model, zero waste promotes a circular economy approach (just like in nature where nothing is wasted) where materials are reused, repaired, composted, or recycled back into productive use.

Small actions you can take today that make a huge difference

"What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make", Dr Jane Goodall.

Recycle

  • Recycle right! Our recycling rules have changed so that it can become standardised across the country, which is great news for sustainability! Do you know the new recycling rules?
  • Reduce your food waste. Your food scraps are a resource waiting to be transformed into something new that will fertilise and regenerate the soil. There are lots of options to cater to everyone's diverse situations – you can compost at home or drop it to a compost hub. You can use your food scraps bin and have it collected from the kerb outside your house.
